Standard Poodle puppies are proud, fluffy Poodle puppies that were originally used as water fowl hunting dogs in northern Europe. Our black Standard Poodles are highly intelligent and easily trained, plus they are fun to live with. Poodles are often used as service and therapy dogs because of their loyal and devoted personalities. Poodles are the only breed of dogs that come in three sizes (Standard, Miniature and Toy) and they do very well with children and other pets. They are fairly active; they enjoy swimming, running, and retrieving and can be excellent at dock diving, barn hunt, flyball and more. Poodles are known as hypoallergenic because they have human-like hair instead of fur and don't shed.
The American Kennel Club currently ranks Poodles at number 7 in popularity. Standard Poodles are highly intelligent, energetic dogs with a great temperament. Although they are historically considered a French dog, poodles likely originated in Germany as water or retriever hunting dogs. The popularity of Poodles may be, in part, due to the breed's three size varieties: standard, miniature, and toy. All of the sizes are considered the same dog breed and are held to the same breed standards with the exception of having different height requirements. Poodles can be very affectionate dogs that make wonderful family companions, hunting dogs, service dogs, agility dogs, barn hunt dogs and more.
Standard poodle breed history:
Originally poodles were retrieving hunting dogs, specialized in water hunting, hence the characteristic coat. The name comes from the old German puddling and means to splash in the water. It is said that in its history it also served as a herding dog, but this has not been proven.
In the course of further breeding, the poodle largely lost its hunting skills, but the joy of retrieving has remained. Today he is valued as a particularly intelligent family dog.
At the beginning of poodle breeding, at the end of the 19th century, there were only large and small poodles, in the classic colors black, white and brown. For a long time, 3 countries fought over the honor of being the country of origin of the poodle. As part of the FCI recognition, France then prevailed over Germany and Russia in the 1930s.
Another size was now added to the breed standard, the miniature poodle, which was followed by the toy in the 1990s; so there were now 4 size variants.
In the 1960s "silver" and in the 1970s "apricot" became the official standard. The recognition of the new color "Red" by France,
or the FCI took place in April 2007. In reality, poodles come in almost all color variants that exist in the canine world. In the 1980s, two-colored poodles were also permitted in Germany, but only in white with black plates (Harlequin) and in black-tan (black-tan).
Black-tan and harlequin poodles are now also recognized nationally in Austria and the Czech Republic. In Germany over 2000 puppies are registered in the VDH stud books every year. Well over half are miniature poodles, the most popular colors are black, white and apricot.
